Solar Photovoltaics Integrated into the Built Environment
Discover cost-effective, aesthetically pleasing photovoltaic solutions and cutting-edge technology, driving us towards a sustainable and low-impact energy future.
Introduction of the project
SPHINX is a 3-year project aiming to demonstrate five different demonstrators, showcasing different applications of building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
The SPHINX project aims to create cost-effective and quickly deployable Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) elements using disruptive matrix shingling technology. These modular, pre-fabricated elements will vary in size and functionality, such as lightweight, semi-transparent, and modular tiles. In addition to matrix shingle innovation, SPHINX focuses on developing cutting-edge encapsulant foils and coatings. These enhancements provide extra functionalities: power boost achieved through spectral management, heat management enabled by infrared filtering, and enhanced aesthetics achieved via light diffusion and coloration. By combining these innovations, SPHINX aims to create cost-effective and quickly deployable BIPV elements, making solar energy integration into buildings more efficient and visually appealing.
The project involves developing new manufacturing technologies implemented at pilot lines and demonstrating these innovations at five sites. An additional goal is to bring back BIPV product fabrication and the full supply chain to Europe, relocating from the current production sites in the US and China.
