Installation and monitoring of Freesuns Demonstrator

Involved partners:
FSUNS and EPFL

Date of achievement of result:
12 March 2026

Between the month of July 2025 and December 2025, Freesuns have installed the newly devolopped SPHINX matrix shingle tiles on 4 roofs and 1 façade, for a total of 500m2 of covered area. Monitoring data are coming since then, and preliminary results can be analyzed after several months of monitoring.

  • Objective: Demonstrate reliability of Freesuns demonstrators
  • Research: Monitoring data have been analyzed
  • Results: Good initial performance and stability
  • What will it be used for: Preliminary work for the global analysis at the end of the project
  • Impact: Good news for WP5

The 270m2 demonstrator have irradiance sensor to analyse tge degradation overtime.

We can see on the figure below that after 8 months, the tiles with the newly developed matrix technology is stable and produce energy.

The above figure show that the energy produced on the roof is injected in the grid between noon and 3PM.

The 62m2 roof below is using newly developed UV downshifter technolgoy on the top row of tiles. This technology helps reduce the degradation of the solar roof tiles.

The above figure shows that UV downshifter tiles are producing the same amount of energy as the others, meaning the added protection did not reduce the power output.

Below are pictures of the 3 other demonstrators. Each tile on these roofs and façade are solar tiles made by matrix shingle technologies.

We can already see that the new products are stable on performance. These preliminary results must be confirmed after at least a year of data next July.
